Preserving a Storied Past, Embracing a Bright Future
Once a thriving warehouse district that bisected the north and south sections of downtown, the R Street Corridor is a 27-block long, two-block wide special planning district within Sacramento’s Central City Community.
The R Street Improvements Project is a key element in historic R Street’s transformation to a new transit-oriented, mixed-use neighborhood. The R Street of tomorrow will celebrate and preserve its industrial past while simultaneously embracing a distinct new urban form to create a truly unique neighborhood in downtown Sacramento.
The 10th to 13th Street improvements are just some of the first steps the City and its community planning partners are taking to promote the corridor as a destination and enhance its diverse development opportunities. With a number of other long-term infrastructure improvements and economic development efforts looming on the horizon, the City envisions an especially bright future for R Street. We hope you will join us in making the “R Street Resurgence” a continuing community success story!

Project Status
Since last year, City staff and the consultant team have held stakeholder meetings as a result of community input on the project design. The design has been fine tuned to be consistent with community interests and to showcase the restoration of R Street. The draft environmental document has just been released for pubic review and comment.
The project is planned for construction to begin sometime in 2009 or 2010.

Photos of Current Conditions

Looking west from 10th and R Streets. Planned improvements will seek to preserve the historic and utilitarian character of the corridor.

The historic rail lines that run down the middle of R Street will be preserved as part of the improvements project. Rail lines have been a key feature of R Street since the 1850s.

Improvements will still allow loading activities for area businesses, and new walkways, street surfaces, and marked on-street parking will enhance safety and corridor aesthetics.
